Jewish Berlin: Emancipation, Destruction and Renewal

4h English, German

The story of Jews in Berlin is one that defines both a nation and humanity at large. While struggling for recognition as citizens and for legal equality, many Berlin Jews would be counted among the most brilliant minds and boldest political figures of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Albert Einstein and Rosa Luxemburg. The Nazis attempted to erase a people and a culture. Come and explore a history that defied and ultimately survived them.

What you'll discover

  • Explore Berlin’s old Jewish quarter and the remarkable people who lived there
  • Learn about the Jewish Enlightenment and Jewish emancipation
  • Visit haunting memorials and places of worship
  • Understand a history of persecution and renewal
  • Discover how the legacy of Jews in Berlin continues to shape Germany

This walk takes you through the extraordinary history of Jews in Germany’s capital from the Middle Ages up to the present day. It is the story of a people frequently reckoning with impossible circumstances. It is here that many wrestled with profound questions about their place in society. Explore the Berlin Jewish enlightenment under the polymath Moses Mendelssohn, and how it paved the way for both religious and political reform. Learn about the long road to emancipation and how it became inseparable from the foundations of modern Germany. Visit the New Synagogue, a monument to an all too brief golden age of tolerance in Berlin. Find out about scientific pioneers like Albert Einstein, and political revolutionaries like Rosa Luxemburg - both of whom called Berlin their home. And trace how the interwar years became an ever-narrowing nightmare for the Jewish community. Against a background of persecution and hiding, hear about Jewish resistance during the Nazi era, such as the daring sabotage raid carried out by Jewish resistance fighters, Herbert and Marianne Baum. See where they and so many others are laid in Europe’s largest Jewish cemetery in Weißensee. On this tour you will uncover the history of one of Europe’s most diverse and dynamic Jewish communities - whose legacy is still felt around the world to this day.

Meet your Stroller

I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, and finished my BA in History at the University of California in Berkeley in 2012. There I was drawn to the Middle Ages and Jewish History. Afterwards, I took a backpacking trip through Europe, with Berlin as my final stop. I was immediately inspired by the city’s incredible past and vibrant present, and so I decided to stay. I learnt German and began an MA in History at the Humboldt University. And soon I found my perfect job: historical tour guide. Berlin is one of the most important cities of the last two centuries, and it’s the perfect destination for the culturally curious. So join me on a tour - in English or in German - and I guarantee you'll be hooked by this city!
