Art & Rebellion: Exploring Berlin’s Modern Soul

3h English

Known as the ‘street art capital’ or ‘the graffiti Mecca’, Berlin has found itself at the centre of the global street art phenomenon of the last few decades. See the murals and graffiti that express the inner life of the city, and learn the stories behind the art. In this walk, we’ll take you on a journey to explore the rebellious nature that spears this movement on.

What you'll discover

  • Look into Berlin’s hidden corners to find extraordinary street art
  • See the most exciting murals in the city
  • Learn about the colourful anarchistic squats
  • Visit a popular spot for artists and nightlife
  • Explore the grounds of an old hospital turned art-house

Come along for an adventure in two of Berlin's most artistic and lively neighborhoods: Friedrichshain in the former East, and Kreuzberg in the West. Learn why street art and graffiti took hold in the city, how the movement has persevered, and just what the future might hold. This walk will take you by colourful ‘occupied’ buildings and street corners where art has simply been left to run wild. We’ll visit a one-time Prussian train car factory turned popular nightspot and artist residency. And we’ll stop to admire large murals and look at some amazing anarchist hangouts. Along the way we’ll pass bars frequented by some of the world’s most creative musicians such as David Bowie and Nick Cave. You’ll hear too about an old hospital building that was saved from destruction by squatters, and experience how street art has transformed particular locations. Set against this vibrant street culture is an ongoing struggle between the values of the revolutionary ‘68 generation and those of big business and gentrification - each offering profoundly different visions of urban life. Neither Berlin nor its wall art will stand still. Instead, a timely story will emerge of a city in flux, fighting for its very soul and identity. Leah Brown

I'm Leah, an American living in Berlin for the last few years. In that time I’ve had the pleasure of exploring Berlin's streets and discovering its varied personalities. From punk to opera, from architecture to landscapes, to the many layers of art and graffiti than can be found running through the east and west, I love the pace and strange mixture of this city - Berlin.
